"BORN TO BE was a remarkable achievement, as Gordon details his rugged upbringing in Montana, recounts many amourous adventures on both sides of the color line, offers blunt commentaries on racial politics, and drops names in copious quantities" (Davis and Foley, HARLEM RENAISSANCE LIVES). Very good to near fine in good, aged dust jacket with darkening to spine and edges, two large chips not affecting any lettering, and splits at folds internally mended with archival tape. Quite scarce.

Hayward (1902-1971) was a theatrical and Hollywood producer, most notably of "South Pacific" and "The Sound of Music." Moses, who was the subject of Robert Caro's 1974 Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, THE POWER BROKER, was known as the "master builder" of mid-20th century New York City and environs; and though Caro's biography dealt a blow to his reputation, Moses' projects were considered by many to be necessary for the region's development after the Great Depression [Wikipedia]. Large octavo, full blue pebbled-leather boards embellished in gilt on front and stamped in gilt on spine which is blocked in red; top edge gilt; marbled endpapers. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Fine in original though worn acetate which we will replace or cover with fresh mylar upon request. Also includes copies of Moses' 23-page response to Caro's book and Caro's response to Moses' response to his book.
