New York: Boni and Liveright, (1927). First American edition. His first book to be translated into English. Translated by Lambert Armour Shears. Klaus was the son of Thomas Mann. An opponent of fascism, he was one of the first German writers to go into exile. He went on to become one of the most versatile and productive members of his generation of writers, eventually making his home here in the U.S. There are two tiny spots at the bottom of the spine where the cloth is worn through, otherwise the book is very good to fine in a lightly spine-tanned dust jacket with small chips and tears and split at front spine fold, but still attractive. Boni & Liveright promotional 4-page leaflet with some edgewear laid in. A scarce book.

Translated from the German by H. T. Lowe-Porter. Small quarto, vellum-backed blue-striped paperboards; gilt lettered spine. Volume I with tissue-protected frontis photo of Mann by E. O. Hoppe; volume II with frontis photo of facsimile manuscript page. A good or better set with covers generally worn and spines showing rubbing, soiling and few tears. Still, a presentable set of this scarce issue. SIGNED BY MANN.

Stuttgarter: Duetscher Bucherbund, no-date. German translation; later printing, as the first was published in Zurich in 1940. Very good with rubbing along the edge of the cover, light soiling to the back board, and a tiny puncture in the cloth binding the size of a pen point on the front cover. The inside is clean, and the green and gold lettering/decoration on the cloth binding is still bright. Dust jacket is gently rubbed and soiled, with one chip to the top of the rear panel and a few closed tears that have been repaired with tape to the verso.

Von Moltke was a German Field Marshall who, in 1857, was given the position Chief of the Prussian General Staff, a position he held for the next 30 years. He made changes to the strategic and tactical methods of the Prussian army; in armament and means of communication; in staff officers' training; and to the method for the mobilization of the army. He also instituted a formal study of European politics in connection with plans for potential campaigns. In short, he rapidly put into place the features of a modern General Staff. Full cloth with gold lettering and front design. Minor wear on corners and spine ends, but still very good overall.
