DER ZIEGELBRENNER [THE BRICK BURNER]; [20 issues from a run of the first 22, in 8 volumes (as published)].
Munchen: Der Ziegelbrenner, 1917-20. First edition. German language ANARCHIST MAGAZINE that reportedly escaped censorship due to it being misclassified by authorities as a magazine for bricklayers. Edited under the name Ret Marut up until March 1919, after which Marut remained anonymous, identified on the rear cover only as being "known to the subscribers." Marut is generally believed to be the mysterious B. Traven, author of TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE and a number of politically charged novels. 20 ISSUES IN TOTAL; in eight volumes, as published. Includes standalone ISSUE 2 (1st year, Dec. 1, 1917, "Inhalt..." on cover); standalone ISSUE 4 (2nd year, July 27, 1918, "Percy Bysshe Shelley..." on cover), MULTI-ISSUE VOLUME "5/6/7/8" (2nd year, Nov. 9, 1918, "Es dammert..." on cover); MULTI-ISSUE VOLUME "9 - 14" (3rd year, Jan. 15, 1919, "Zensur..." on cover); standalone ISSUE 15 (3rd year, Jan. 30, 1919, "Eine Rede..." on cover); MULTI-ISSUE VOLUME "16/17" (3rd year, Mar. 10, 1919, "Briefe an den..." on cover); MULTI-ISSUE VOLUME "18/19" (3rd year, Dec. 3, 1919, "Geburtswehe..." on cover); and MULTI-ISSUE VOLUME "20/21/22" (4th year, Jan. 6, 1920, "Die Zerstorung..." on cover). 8 narrow 8vo volumes in light red paperwraps printed in black; volume containing issues 9-14 perfect-bound, rest are stapled. Covers toned to various pinkish shades, with first one (issue 2) toned to light brown. Altogether a very good set missing only issues 1 and 3 from a nearly complete run of the first 22. There were 40 issues total published in 13 volumes from 1917 to 1921. Original, individual volumes such as these are quite scarce. ALSO INCLUDED -- hardcover collection of all 40 issues published in facsimile (Rolf Recknagel, ed.; Leipzig : Edition Leipzig, 1967; about very good with rubbing to edges).
