"Let My People Go." F. W. Bird, Francis William. "Let My People Go."
Boston: Commercial Printing House, 1862. First edition. "Originally published in Norfolk Co. Journal of December 14, 1861, republished with slight additions and corrections" (from title page). Bird was a Massachussetts Republican politician and anti-slavery advocate known as the "Sage of Walpole." This is his call for the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in which he makes religious comparisons to Moses leading the slaves out of Egypt as in the old Negro Spiritual "Let My People Go." Dis-boound eight-page booklet (shows evidence of having once been bound). Faint stamp to bottom of title page, few light marks of soiling on back, otherwise about very good. COLD MOUNTAIN. Charles Frazier. COLD MOUNTAIN.
New York: Atlantic Monthly Press, (1997). First edition. Author's first book. Winner of National Book Award. Made into the 2003 movie starring Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renée Zellweger, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman and Donald Sutherland. The first issue with "man-woman" on page 25. The back panel contains the quote we love best, "This novel is so magnificent...it has occured to me...the joy I received in reading it, will fall over every other book...It seems even possible to never want to read another book, so wonderful is this one."-- Rick Bass. We enjoyed it too, but maybe not that much. Very good, with black cloth at spine showing some damp stains (otherwise would be fine); in fine dust jacket with the ubiquitous Berendt-quote sticker on front panel. NBA WINNER.
