FIFTY YEARS AGO; or A Golden Anniversary; [anonymously penned ode to an unnamed Civil War veteran and his wife on the occasion of their fiftieth wedding anniversary].
[No-place: no-publisher, no-date [circa 1910s]. Charming, circa mid 1910s four-page autograph poem comprised of fourteen four-line stanzas each employing the simple rhyme scheme of ABCB. Written on plain off-white 8 x 10” note paper lightly lined in blue and tied together with 2 mustard-colored ribbons at top. The poem alludes to the couple’s marriage “way back in the fifties” and the husbands subsequent service in the Civil War: “We’ll pass on to the sixties,/ Our country’s trying time,/ When the President of our nation/ Called for men to march in line./ This loyal man, our subject,/ Responded to the call….” And a few lines later, “Our men had gained a victory/ To blot out our country’s stains.” Text lightly faded but wholly legible, and pages tanned and stained with creasing along top edges and few small tears. Includes a fifth page at the end which is blank and has sustained slightly more staining. A sentimental artifact of a bygone era and testament to the pride with which many men served in battle and women served at home.
