A TANGLED TALE; [collects Carroll’s “Knots,” mathematical puzzles in story form].
London: Macmillan and Co., 1885. First edition in book form. Contents originally appeared serially in “The Monthly Packet” magazine edited by Charlotte Yonge. Six illustrations by Arthur B. Frost added for the book. Collects all ten of Carroll’s brief humorous stories presenting mathematical problems to be solved (or “Knots,” as he called them), as well as his answers and those of unwary participants in the game who he at times pokes fun at. 12mo gilt-stamped red cloth boards; black coated endpapers; all edges gilt; 152 pages plus single page of ads. Quite good with staining at center of spine extending to front board; tiny chip in cloth at head of spine; top of spine gilt lettering and ornamentation dulled, bottom perished; hinges cracking but still tight; light chipping to free endpaper edges, and frontis and title page tanned (from old glassine “protector” which is not present). Small bookseller ticket of John Howell, Importer, San Francisco to rear pastedown. [Williams, Madan, Green 182].
