YOUNG LONIGAN | THE YOUNG MANHOOD OF STUDS LONIGAN | and JUDGMENT DAY; [1940s reprints of the three volumes comprising the “Studs Lonigan Trilogy,” each one INSCRIBED BY FARRELL; together with a TYPED LETTER SIGNED].

Cleveland: The World Publishing Company, (1945 – 1948). Inscribed association copies of 1940s reprints (first published in the 1930s). From the collection of famed sportswriter Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman. ALL THREE VOLUMES INSCRIBED TO ZIMMERMAN’S FATHER, CHARLES “SASHA” ZIMMERMAN, Farrell’s “old friend and comrade.” Charles S. Zimmerman (1897 – 1979) was a social activist and long-time official of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union [ILGWU]. He and Farrell were both active in the radical labor movement and members and of various socialist parties, including the Socialist Party of America. YOUNG LONIGAN and THE YOUNG MANHOOD OF STUDS LONIGAN are similarly bound 1948 first printings of the “Forum Books Edition” with new introductions by Farrell and are INSCRIBED, respectively, “For Sasha Zimmerman/ friend and comrade/ Jim Farrell/ July 23, 1977” and “To my old friend and/ comrade/ Sasha Zimmerman/ Jim Farrell/ July 23, 1977.” JUDGMENT DAY is a 1945 second printing “Tower Books Edition” with pages brittle and darkened due to the use of low-quality wood pulp paper typical to many WWII publications. It’s INSCRIBED, “For Sasha/ Zimmerman/ My old friend and/ comrade/ Jim Farrell/ July 23, 1977.” TOGETHER WITH a June 15 1977 TYPED LETTER SIGNED by Farrell to Paul Zimmerman expressing his agreement with his views expressed in Zimmerman’s “little piece in NEW AMERICA about Castro and Cuba,” his own views on Castro colluding with Russia, and his belief that their end goal is the isolation of Latin America from the U.S., summing his thoughts up with “if Americans want Castro to like them – it would be better to give him the Azores than to send the Yankees to Havana.” Farrell goes on to talk about meeting up after his return from a trip to France at longtime New York Post sportswriter Maury Allen’s house together with Paul’s father, Charles, the recipient of the inscriptions. Closing with “You undoubtedly know that your father is a very dear friend of mine, and an old comrade. Fraternally, Jim Farrell.” (Judging by the date of the inscriptions, it seems safe to say that the men got together the following month on July 23, 1977.) Includes the original aged and stained envelope hand addressed by Farrell to Paul Zimmerman at the Sports Department of The New York Post. The first two books are very good with spine ends a little worn. The final volume is good only with text darkened, brittle paper showing edge tears, and head of spine beginning to fray. All three volumes lack dust jackets. Letter shows only minor wear and light creases from folding. It would be difficult to find another set of all three books inscribed to the same recipient and with similarly excellent provenance.
