A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES: The Birth of Britain (1956); The New World (1956); The Age of Revolution (1957); and The Great Democracies (1958); [first printings of all 4 volumes, the complete set].

London: Cassell and Co, (1956 – 1958). First edition set. Complete in four volumes. Churchill’s sprawling history covering the time from Julius Caesar to the lead up of World War I. “There has never been a history like this written by a man who has himself made history; never have the political and diplomatic decisions of the past been considered by a writer who, all his life, has had to make decisions of the same character and of the same magnitude. That alone must make this history unique” – from the dust jacket flap, volume I. Small 4to (or large 8vo) red cloth stamped in gilt on spines; top edges red; 416, 344, 332, and 322 pages, respectively, including indexes. Volume one covers slightly scuffed and dust jacket has faint glass ring on front panel and long tear in rear panel neatly repaired with tape on verso. Otherwise, overall, a very good or better set with endpapers and page edges lightly foxed and mild rubbing to edges but covers generally bright and clean and dust jackets showing only moderate shelf and reading wear. Increasingly scarce with all four volumes first printings.
