A SLAVE TO DUTY & OTHER WOMEN.

Chicago & New York: Herbert S. Stone & Company, 1898. First edition. Collection of five short stories including the title one. French was a popular and well-paid writer in her time and, seemingly, a study in contrasts. She lived most of her adult life with and is buried next to her "friend" Jane Allen Crawford. She was a woodworker and a photographer. She was also anti-suffragist, anti-union, pro-capitalist, and pro-temperance. 16mo decorative cream cloth stamped in green and red; top edge gilt; 221 pages. Very good or better with light bumps to spine ends and corners and boards mildly soiled but interior bright & clean. Contemporaneous Christmas gift inscription on front endpaper.
