EIGHT OR NINE WISE WORDS ABOUT LETTER-WRITING; [later edition with presumed spurious inscription on front].

Oxford: Emberlin and Son, no-date [circa 1904]. Later edition. Carroll's charming booklet on letter writing originally published in 1890. An undated later edition not in Williams, Maden, et al. Similar copy recorded in Lovett & Lovett [note to 1976, p. 534] without any note as to whether or not a date is present: "later edition (not in WMGC) with wrappers taller than pages, and final advert. on p. 36 for Italian Alice." This copy with "With the Author's Compliments" written in dark purple ink across the front. Carroll died in 1898, and the advertisement page at rear includes an "Illustrated Pocket Classics" edition published in 1904. So, unless the cover on this copy was printed and inscribed at a much earlier date than its contents, the inscription is most certainly in another's hand. 81 mm x 106 mm (around 3 1/8" x 4 1/8") sewn paperwraps with over-hanging cover, which is glued along the spine, serving as title page; 36 pages including one page publisher's ads. Provenance: small bookplate of Carroll Atwood Wilson tipped inside front cover. Good to very good with covers moderately soiled, tips nicked, few tiny tears, and small glue stain to rear upper right corner. Interior pages are fine.
