SURFACING; [true first edition, inscribed].

Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, (1972). First edition. Her second novel. INSCRIBED in the year of publication on title page: "For Beth Appeldoorn/ + her fantastic/ bookstore/ September 1972/ with best wishes/ Margaret Atwood." 1972 was the year Appeldoorn and partner Susan Sandler founded Toronto's Longhouse Books -- a shop specializing exclusively in books by Canadian authors (they sold it in 1989, and it closed in 1995). The book centers around themes of ecology, conservation, gender identity, and the emerging Canadian nationalism and was the basis for the 1981 film of the same name. Near fine with three tiny stains to lower edge of textblock (one extending slightly to edges of pp. 11-19); in very good or better dust jacket with two unobtrusive, tears at top of rear panel, touch of inconspicuous rubbed creasing and scuffing, and small triangular chip at head of spine. Increasingly scarce in the first printing and especially so signed.
