THE EXCESSES OF GOD: ROBINSON JEFFERS AS A RELIGIOUS FIGURE; [Inscribed copy of early typescript together with various iterations of hand-corrected page proofs and a copy of the published book].
(Stanford: Stanford University Press), 1986 - 1988. First edition. High-quality copy of an advance typescript draft preceding publication of the book by two years, INSCRIBED BY EVERSON ON TITLE PAGE, "Specially inscribed for John Knight/ who helped mightily in [expediting] this project/ Bill Everson/ July 21, 1986/ Kingfisher Flat." Perfect-bound in plain dark brown limp-leatherette covers with plain black cloth-tape spine, approximately 8.5 x 11"; 280 pages printed on rectos only. The copier has picked up the occasional marginal notation or mark but there don't appear to be any hand-corrections to the text. Near fine with p.81 askew when copied cutting off some text at lower and right edges of that page. TOGETHER WITH several unbound page proofs dating from August to December 1987. Most are marked "2nd Proof" and one includes several HANDWRITTEN COMMENTS AND CORRECTIONS BY EVERSON. All are marked in some way by various participants in the publication process including copy editors, printers, typesetters, etc., and among the various proofs are ORIGINAL TYPESCRIPT drafts of the index, one poem, and portion of one page (presumably typed by staff). Provenance: TLS from Helen Tartar, Humanities Editor, to collector Allen K. Mears indicating the proofs are being sent to him for the cost of postage. TOGETHER WITH a copy of the book, which was published in 1988 (fine in near fine dust jacket with barest wear). An interesting collection demonstrating the many design decisions and thorough copy editing that went into the publication of the book.
