THE JOURNAL OF A TOUR TO THE HEBRIDES, WITH SAMUEL JOHNSON, LL.D: Containing Some Poetical Pieces by Dr. Johnson, relative to the Tour, and never before published; A Series of his Conversation, Literary Anecdotes, and Opinions of Men and Books: With an Authentick Account of The Distresses and Escape of the Grandson of King James II in the Year 1746.

London: Printed by Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly, 1785. Second edition, "revised and corrected." Published just a few months after the first edition. Boswell's account of his tour with Samuel Johnson through the highlands and western islands of Scotland. Published following Johnson's death in 1784, and 10 years after Johnson's own account of their trip, JOURNEY TO THE WESTERN ISLANDS OF SCOTLAND (1775). Considered a teaser of sorts for Boswell's LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON, which is advertised at rear as "Preparing for the Press." Rebound, retaining the half-title and ad leaf, in modern light brown leatherette with gilt-stamped black spine label reading simply, "Boswell | Journal." Near fine with light marks to rear board and contemporaneous ownership signature of "Sarah & Maria Payne" over an obvious erasure of a previous owner's name.
