Often referred to as Johnson's "LIVES OF THE POETS." Attractively bound in 8vo gilt-stamped quarter leatherette with raised spine bands, marbled paper boards, all edges green. Vol. I with frontispiece portrait of Johnson with imprint "London: Published as the Act directs June 8th 1781"; Vol. IV with ad leaf at rear. Frontis pages moderately foxed and offset somewhat to title page, both pages showing slight encroachment of green page-edge stain; otherwise, a very good to near fine set with rubbing to marbled boards but spines quite fine.
