INSCRIBED BY MERWIN on half-title page, “Warm and good wishes to/ Jane and Walter Sullivan/ Sewanee/ 1/22/90/ William.” Walter Sullivan (1924-2006) was an author, critic, longtime Vanderbilt University professor, authority on Southern literature and one of the founding members of The Fellowship of Southern Writers. His wife, Jane Harrison Sullivan (1923-2022), taught English literature at Aquinas College. Merwin won the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry in 1990; presume this copy inscribed at the annual celebration held in January. Fine in fine dust jacket with barest wear.
