First appearance of poem later collected in FLIGHT AMONG THE TOMBS (Knopf, 1996) in which death saunters about among the crowds at a horse race, "....Among these holiday throngs, a passer-by | Mute, unremarked, insouciant, saunter I, | One who has placed-- | Despite the tumult, the pounding of hooves, the sweat, | And the urgent importance of everybody's bet-- | No premium on haste." 12 x 9" off-white heavy paper folded twice to make 4 pages, including covers; front with title printed in black and red and with small illustration of horse. Issued on the occasion of Hecht's April 1994 visit as Robert Frost Library Fellow. Fine in original mailing envelope. Quite scarce.
