Boston: James R. Osgood and Co., 1883. First edition. Two volumes. Deluxe large paper issue. Number 153 of 250 copies. Small 4to (approximately 6.5 x 9.75") orange cloth boards with black paper spines and orange paper spine labels printed in black and red; in orange paper dust jackets with matching labels. Apparent custom bindings and dust jackets, as Myerson [A39.1.c] calls for white vellum. It would appear that the paper and cloth on this set may have been laid down over the original binding. Title pages printed in black and red and frontispiece portraits inserted in each volume, as called for. Very good or better with endpapers darkened and some scattered foxing; in about very good dust jackets with small amount of staining, few chips and tears, and small hole in rear panel volume I. TOGETHER WITH the "Supplementary Letters" published by Ticknor & Co. in 1886. Small 8vo brown cloth boards with gilt-stamped leather spine label; 80 pages plus 24 pp of ads. Spine ends a bit nicked and frayed and small chip to spine label otherwise very good.
