Caroline Pilcher was the widow of Arthor Marwood, a friend of both Conrad's and Ford Madox Ford (Ford is said to have based his Christopher Tietjens character on him). She married Walter Pilcher a few years after Marwood's death. AS I KNEW HIM incorporates portions of Jessie Conrad's PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS adding an opening chapter. Small 8vo deep-red cloth boards, gilt-stamped front and spine; illustrated with frontis portrait of Conrad (as a toddler) and 2 photographic plates; 162 pages. Very good or better with cloth at spine a little dulled but gilt lettering still bright, scattered foxing, occasional marginal stain, and first blank darkened from item previously laid in; in very good or better lightly soiled dust jacket with shallow chipping to head of spine.
