The life of Shakespeare's Sir John Falstaff as imagined by Brough, a writer of satires, burlesques, and radical poetry, as well as more conventional forms of prose. IN THE ORIGINAL 10 MONTHLY PARTS with woodcut illustration on front by Cruikshank and 2 etched plates inserted in each, as called for (twenty plates in all). Tissue guards present between all but two sets of plates (new guards laid in) and all but Part I unopened. "Publisher's Presentation" blindstamp to upper corner Part X. Four-page "List of New Works Announced for Publication" dated Nov. 1857 laid in Part VII. Text on back covers corresponding to Cohn's except for Part III ("A List of New Works") and Part IV ("New Books of the Season") [Cohn 96]. Condition is overall very good to near fine with following issues noted: Part I, touch of spotting to plates; Part VII, old, relatively faint damp staining to fore edges throughout; Part VIII, dark stains to upper corner last several leaves and along upper portion rear cover. Housed together in gilt-lettered green cloth-covered chemise with bookplate of Maude M. Monell inside first panel and matching green cloth-covered slipcase (near fine).
