London: Fisher Unwin, 1896. First edition. Conrad's second novel, inspired by his experience as chief mate of the small steamer, the "Vidar." Adapted into the 1951 movie of the same name, directed by Carol Reed and featuring Trevor Howard as Willems (the movie was nominated for best British film and best film from any source at the 1953 BAFTA awards). Though the exact number of copies is unknown, estimates range between 1,000 copies (Unwin's statement in Cagle's unpublished bibliography) and 3,000 copies (Wise's biblography). In our experience, the latter, higher number seems more likely. This copy with the typographical errors "this" for "their" p.26:31; page 129 numbered "10"; and "hate" for "fate" p.356:26. In bluish-green cloth with lower paper edges rough trimmed and top edges gilt. Binding a little cocked, minor fraying on spine ends, name and 1898 date on front endpaper. Still, about very good. HIS SECOND NOVEL, INSPIRED BY HIS EXPERIENCES ABOARD A SMALL STEAMER.
