Item #53152 THE GOOD SOLDIER. Ford Madox Ford, Ford Madox Hueffer.

THE GOOD SOLDIER.

New York / London: John Lane / Bodley Head, 1915. First edition, American issue. One of his more famous works, a novel set before World War I chronicling the tragic lives of two couples using intricate flashbacks. Critic and poet R.P. Blackmur's copy with his blindstamp to endpaper and half-title. Very good with light wear to corners and spine tips and spine lettering dulled but readable. Lacking the rare dust jacket. Chatty personal letter laid in on Cornell University Department of English letterhead dated in 1972 from "Daddy" and, on verso, "Mother" to "Dearest Bibsy" relaying family and departmental gossip, discussing the issue of the book, and providing an optimistic estimation of the book's future value on the market -- "Maybe you can sell it some day at Parke-Benet and buy one of your grandchildren a sailboat."
