THE OCTOPUS A Story of California; [scarce correct first issue].

New York: Doubleday Page & Co., 1901. First edition, first printing/issue. This first volume in Norris's planned "Epic of the Wheat" trilogy deals with the raising of wheat in Chicago. The second volume, THE PIT, was completed shortly before his sudden death in 1902 (following an appendix operation) and deals with speculation in the Chicago wheat exchange. This copy with all the correct points listed in BAL 15036 (and there are quite a lot). Most notably, with J.J. Little device on copyright page and repeated lines on page 526, which is integral as called for. Good with slight dip in spine which is a little shaken, touch of rubbing affecting "b" in "by" on spine, spine ends softened and beginning to fray, and evidence of old damp staining affecting upper right corner rear cover, inner hinges (both front and back), and upper inner hinge area of first several leaves, pp. 245-445, and pp. 560 on. Quite scarce in the correct first issue in any condition.
