Item #50716 EPITAPH ON GEORGE MOORE; [inscribed]. Charles Morgan, George Moore.

EPITAPH ON GEORGE MOORE; [inscribed].

London: Macmillan & Co Ltd, 1935. First edition. INSCRIBED on front endpaper, "A. T. Chenhalls/ by, with or from/ Charles Morgan/ The White House/ East Claydon/ January 22, 1938." [As an unrelated aside, Alfred T. Chenhalls died in 1943 along with actor Leslie Howard when German bombers targeted the commercial flight on which the men were traveling together -- speculation about which continues to this day.] Morgan's tribute and apology of sorts to Moore for being unable to write a biographer of the Irish writer -- as he had been tasked to do by Moore himself -- due to the unwillingness of Lady Cunard to let him have a look at Moore's letters to her (eventually published in 1957). 12mo white cloth-backed marbled paper boards stamped in gilt on spine; 56 pages; illustrated with frontis "Death-Mask" of Moore and one plate in the text. Near fine with mild soiling to white cloth and touch of offset (from binding materials) to front inner joint and half-title page. From the collection of cartoonist Claude Smith with his penciled signature on front pastedown.
