Item #49669 PRINCES OF THE NIGHT. Joseph Kessel.

New York: The Macaulay Co., (1928). First American edition. Basis for the French movie "Nuits De Princes." Translated by Jack Kahane, writer and publisher who founded the Obelisk Press in Paris in 1929 after his publisher, Grant Richards, went bankrupt. Kahane mixed serious work with smut in his list of publications--he was able to take advantage of a legal loop-hole whereby books published in France in English were not subject to the censorship otherwise practiced at the time. The Obelisk Press published Henry Miller's TROPIC OF CANCER and other works which fellow publishers would not touch for fear of prosecution, among which were LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER and some of Joyce's works. Back cover has minor water stain, though not rippled, and there is a tiny insect hole at fore edge of 20 or so pages, otherwise the book is bright and near fine in price-clipped dust jacket with some water staining on verso resulting in some minor darkening showing through on front. Still, close to very good.
