THE NAKED AND THE DEAD; [signed on a laid-in label].
New York: Rinehart and Company, (1948). First edition of the author's first book. SIGNED on small label laid in the book. Acclaimed as one of the best to come out of WWII. A Burgess 99 title, "It remains Mailer's best, and certainly the best war novel to emerge from the United States" (Burgess). Minor wear to spine and corner edges of the black simulated cloth boards, otherwise near fine with lettering very bright. In the scarce first-issue dust jacket with "A Word from the Publisher" introductory blurb by Stanley Rinehart on both flaps comparing Mailer favorably to Hemingway and others. (Later-issue jackets with reviews are much more common.) The jacket is price clipped, has shallow rubbed chipping and small tears to corners and spine ends, and shows light rubbing to folds. Still, a very good example of this jacket which, in general, has not held up well over the years.
