Chelsea, NY: Chocorua Press, 1929. First edition. Number 213 of 450 numbered copies SIGNED BY MORLEY. Issued in December 1929 for distribution through Random House, presumably as a Christmas greeting. First separate appearance of an essay on writing in which Morley contemplates why there isn't "something in a writer's kit that could correspond to the Palette Knife." Collected the previous year in OFF THE DEEP END (Doubleday, Doran: 1928). Small 4to multi-colored illustrated cloth boards; unpaginated; six illustrations by Rene Gockinga that have been colored by hand -- making each one unique. About very good with spine tanned, cover lightly soiled, inner hinges darkened in spots (binding glue has not aged well), webbing visible at last page of text where it has been over-opened, and few small tears in one tissue guard. Housed in original brown paper-covered slipcase with off-white spine label printed in brown (nick and slight darkening to spine label, chip in paper covering at upper open edge, otherwise about very good). Relatively scarce in slipcase.
