ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. Lewis Carroll. ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND.
London: Macmillan, 1866. First edition to be published but technically the second British edition, as the exceedingly rare 1865 first edition was suppressed and only 22 copies are known to exist today. His classic tale of Alice's fall through the rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar creatures. The twists of logic throughout this tale have gained it lasting popularity with children and adults alike, and it is considered to be one of the best examples of the "literary nonsense" genre (Wikipedia). Finely, freshly bound in full, red goatskin with four raised spine bands; three gilt-stamped, green-leather spine labels (title, author & date); gilt and blind spine decorations, including gilt center stamps onlaid in green leather. Front and back covers each with inset panel of hand-colored, black-foil images stamped on cream-colored lambskin after Tenniel's original illustrations. Housed in clamshell box with quarter-red-goatskin rounded spine, raised spine bands, center stamps, leather spine labels, and red linen cloth; box lined with red velvet. Binding and case by Dragonfly Bindery/StudioBinding; design executed by Patricia & George Sargent. Frontis tissue darkened and scattered light foxing throughout otherwise the interior is in very good condition. The binding is fine. FINELY, FRESHLY BOUND IN FULL LEATHER.
