BIBLIOMANIA; or, BOOK-MADNESS: The First Edition; Privately Reprinted. Thomas Frognall Dibdin. BIBLIOMANIA; or, BOOK-MADNESS: The First Edition; Privately Reprinted.
[London]: The Club of Odd Sticks, 1864. A facsimile of the first edition originally published in 1809. The lone publication of the "Club of Odd Sticks," which seems to have been formed by Francis S. Hoffman and a few others solely to reprint Dibdin's book [Growell, American Book Clubs, 1897]. ONE OF ONLY 40 QUARTO COPIES (there were also 57 "royal octavo" copies). Three-quarter brown Morocco leather over marbled boards; with marbled endpapers and top edge gilt. An extremely "large paper" copy, i.e., with very large margins. This gentle spoof of book collectors and their idiosyncrasies purports to diagnose and to cure the disease and reportedly gave rise to the term "bibliomania." Penciled note at head of first blank designating this copy "Gift Estate of Nathaniel Paine, October 10, 1921." Presumably a gift to the American Antiquarian Society, as their stamp designating it sold is at rear ("Sold by AAS"). Tips a little rubbed and light stain to front board else near fine. DIAGNOSIS AND CURE?
