CINQUE PORTS. Ford Madox Ford, Ford Madox Hueffer. CINQUE PORTS.
London: Blackwood and Sons, 1900. First edition, one of only 525 copies [Harvey A8]. Cinque Ports is a confederation of maritime towns and coastal villages in Kent and Sussex originally formed for military and trade purposes. It lies at the eastern end of the English Channel, where the crossing to the continent is narrowest, and includes Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover, and Sandwich. Ford lived in the area for several years among a group of writers including, most famously, Henry James, H.G. Wells and Joseph Conrad. (But Ford is the only one to have contributed to the literature on the area.) Illustrated by William Hyde with 14 gorgeous tissue-protected photogravure plates and 19 drawings in the text. 4to, (approximately 11 x 8"); 403 pages including index. Tan cloth lettered and with front cover illustration in gilt. Top edge gilt, others uncut; red endpapers. Two minor bumps to cloth cover edges, otherwise near fine to fine. A WRITERS PARADISE?
