FEMALE POLICY DETECTED: Or, the Arts of a Designing Woman Laid Open. E. Ward. FEMALE POLICY DETECTED: Or, the Arts of a Designing Woman Laid Open.
London: Printed for the Booksellers, 1812. Originally published in 1695, this little book (a little larger than 3 x 5 inches) reveals designing women's secrets -- "Teaching: 1. Of her allurements, Inconstancy, Love, Revenge, Pride and Ingratitude. 2. A pleasant and profitable Discourse in defence of married men, against peevish, fretful and scolding Wives; with several notable examples of the Mischiefs and Miseries which have attended their Lust and Pride. 3. A true character of a virtuous Woman, or Wife indeed." Small, 32mo. 95 pages. Cover worn (appears to be original) and pages considerably darkened but readable, with some foxing and water staining. We note one other online (1835) with a woodcut frontis, which apparently did not appear in this edition. There is, however, an enlightening news item pasted inside the rear cover elucidating a 1770 law enacted by the English Parliament against obtaining husbands under false pretenses, i.e., using "scents, paints, cosmetic washes, artificial teeth, false hair, Spanish wool, iron [iron?], iron stays, bolstered hips, or high-heeled shoes." Oh my. CONVENIENTLY POCKET-SIZED.

GUBERNATOR. Robert Penn Warren. GUBERNATOR.
([Warsaw], Poland): Panstwowy Instytut Wydawniczy, (1960). First Polish edition, with a prologue by Bronislaw Zielinski. Paperwraps, in dust jacket. Reprinted in 1962 in boards, and then again in 1964 in two volumes (Grimshaw J22a). This appears to have been Warren's personal copy, with "1st printing--20,000" apparently in Warren's hand. We purchased the book from a dealer who bought it from bibliographer and collector Stuart Wright, who is known to have received books from Warren's personal library. Small ink stamp inside rear cover, spine a little creased, otherwise near fine in white, printed paperwraps and dust jacket. Dust jacket shows light edge rubbing, few tiny nicks, and slight tanning at spine, otherwise very good to near fine. Scarce.
