Volume one of a two-volume set collecting poems, essays and plays, this volume being poetry only. Although not noted in the book, this volume is from the collection of Robert Wilson, who operated the Phoenix Book Shop in New York City from 1951 to 1989 and was a prominent member of the literary community.

Washington, D.C. The Associated Publishers, Inc. (1945). First edition. Brooks served as pastor of the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in D.C. for over sixty years. Illustrated with photographs of Brooks beginning at age 15 in 1866, just one year out of slavery. Small dent and faint red mark on spine, otherwise very good to near fine in bright dust jacket with matching red mark on spine, light damp staining, few small chips and and closed tears, otherwise very good. Dust jacket illustration by James Amos Porter, who was a pioneer in the field of African-American art history. Woodson (who wrote the preface) founded The Associated Publishers in 1920. It is the oldest African-American publishing company in the United States.
