THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT. Walter Tevis. THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT.
New York: Random House, (1983). First edition, advance reading copy, very good or better in glossy paperwraps. Publisher's coffee-splattered form letter to potential paperback-rights' seekers laid in along with reader Fred Chase's typed, internal "Avon Books Reader's Report," which is glowing ("The book is beautifully written--I can't remember one false note"), speaks to the book's marketability, and is perhaps prescient in noting: "I can see a number of publishers bidding for this, driving up the price and virtually destroying any chance to make a little money on it." Avon didn't publish the paperback.
