THE LIFE OF PADDY O'FLARRITY, WHO, FROM A SHOE BLACK, HAS, BY PERSEVERENCE AND GOOD CONDUCT, ARRIVED TO A MEMBER OF CONGRESS... A Spur to Youth; Or Davy Crockett Beaten. Political Satire, By "Paddy Flarrity" THE LIFE OF PADDY O'FLARRITY, WHO, FROM A SHOE BLACK, HAS, BY PERSEVERENCE AND GOOD CONDUCT, ARRIVED TO A MEMBER OF CONGRESS... A Spur to Youth; Or Davy Crockett Beaten.
(Washington, DC: No-Publisher), 1834. First edition and, we presume, the only one. Sabin, 17575; Wright v1, 1977. Cited in WorldCat (the online library catalog) as "A parody of a political figure of the time, probably either Thomas Hart Benton, Missouri senator, or Adam Huntsman, Tennessee congressman, who defeated Davy Crockett in the 1834 election." The copyright date post-dates the date of publication but in the WorldCat entry it is surmised that "post-dating the date of publication is presumed part of the parody." Charles Fanning, in THE IRISH VOICE IN AMERICA, says the story parodies "American rags-to-riches, moralizing fiction" and political figures of the time. But he names Davy Crockett and President Andrew Jackson. Apparently the story covers a lot of ground. According to Fanning, "Paddy O'Flarrity is a story of a wily, amoral, immigrant Irish boy's rise in the world of American politics. It is written with deliberately outlandish grammar," and satirizes American stereotypes of life in Ireland. 16mo (just under 4.5x7"), original brown cloth boards with printed front label. Rear free endpaper removed, otherwise complete. Name on back board, covers stained and fraying, light stains to endpapers and margins but text block still very bright. Altogether quite good.
