DIARY AND CORRESPONDENCE OF SAMUEL PEPYS. Samuel Pepys. DIARY AND CORRESPONDENCE OF SAMUEL PEPYS.
Philadelphia: David McKay, 1887. Early American edition in four volumes with four portraits. Originally published in 1825, based on diaries kept in the 1660's. Pepys was the secretary to the Admiralty during the reigns of Charles II and James II. His reporting of historical events as well as his striking descriptions of his life and times have made this one of the most famous diaries ever published. The diary was deciphered from the original shorthand manuscript by the Rev. J. Smith. Also includes "a life" and notes by Richard Lord Braybrooke. Frontis portraits of Pepys, Elizabeth Pepys, Cromwell and Charles II. Red leather spine with raised bands, and marbled boards and endpapers. Top edge gilt.
