ANYTHING FOR BILLY. Larry McMurtry. ANYTHING FOR BILLY.
New York: Simon & Schuster, (1988). First edition, in a RARE PROOF DUST JACKET with blank flaps and a completely different design. INSCRIBED on the front endpaper, "To Carmen/ A gloomy tale/ Larry McMurtry." We have never seen another proof jacket offered, which isn't to say there aren't others; but it was purchased from a former Simon & Schuster rep and, given its scarcity, is probably one of only a few produced. The proof jacket design more closely resembles the design of the jacket for LONESOME DOVE and is more attractive, to us at least, than the one the book was eventually issued in. It's hard to understand why they would have changed it. It was sold to us on a copy of the uncorrected proof; but we've put it on this inscribed copy of the book because it seems to us to be the best way to display it. It is slightly taller than the eventual, published jacket and therefore over-hangs the book by a scant eighth-inch and is just slightly loose. The book itself is fine and still in its original, fine dust jacket with the proof jacket (showing only minor wear) over it. RARE PROOF DUST JACKET.
