AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO (2 Record Set): Inscribed to his nurse. Groucho Marx. AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO (2 Record Set): Inscribed to his nurse.
(Beverly Hills: A & M Records Inc. 1972). First edition. A&M SP3515. Double album with single leaf insert. INSCRIBED BY GROUCHO ON FRONT COVER in purple, "To Barbara a good nurse and a nice woman / Groucho." It is likely the inscription is to Barbara Winger Bruner, who worked for Marx in 1977, the final year of his life. (According to a 1983 UPI Bulletin, Bruner testified in a lawsuit filed by Marx's estate against Erin Fleming, the Canadian actress who was Marx's companion, characterizing her actions as "hostile and abusive.") This best-selling album was recorded at Carnegie Hall during Marx's last one-man show. The insert features a pictorial collage and quotes from celebrities including T.S. Eliot -- "Your portrait hangs on my wall next to W.B. Yeats. You are my most coveted pin-up. And I am your utmost admirer." Fine.

TWO DISCOURSES: A DEAD FAITH ANATOMIZED and THE SELF-JUSTICIARY CONVICTED AND CONDEMNED. Samuel Mather. TWO DISCOURSES: A DEAD FAITH ANATOMIZED and THE SELF-JUSTICIARY CONVICTED AND CONDEMNED
Boston: Reprinted by J. Draper, for D. Henchman in Cornhill, 1740. First combined edition of these two scarce works which were first published in 1697 and 1707, respectively. [Evans 4560-61, but with linking title page; Sabin 46788-89]. The complete titles are DEAD FAITH ANATOMIZED: A Discourse on the Nature, and the Danger, with the Deadly Symptoms of a Dead Faith, and THE SELF-JUSTICIARY CONVICTED AND CONDEMNED: Or, A Discourse Concerning the Difficulty and Necessity of Renouncing Our Own Righteousness. Pastor Samuel Mather (1651-1728), a cousin of Cotton Mather, is credited with healing a 10-year break in the Congregationalist First Church of Windsor (the oldest Congregational church in Connecticut) which had resulted in the formation of a separate Presbyterian Party of Windsor. This was surely no mean feat. Text pages are darkened, stained, occasionally torn and often edgeworn but intact and wholly readable. Freshly rebound in quarter leather with marbled boards. Only one copy of this combined edition has appeared at auction and that was in 1977. FIRST COMBINED EDITION OF TWO SCARCE WORDS.

WILLIAM SOMERSET MAUGHAM: A Catalogue of the Loren and Fances Rothchild Collection. William Somerset Maugham, Loren Whiteman Rothschild, Deborah. WILLIAM SOMERSET MAUGHAM: A Catalogue of the Loren and Fances Rothchild Collection...
Los Angeles: Heritage Press, 2001. First edition. Compiled and edited by Loren Rothschild and Deborah Whiteman, with an introduction by Paul Theroux. A competent job and well worth the price for both collectors and dealers. In addition to the books, it contains sections on letters, manuscripts, typescripts and other Maugham related items. It is 8 x 11 inches with 370 pages including an index and numerous illustrations. In regard to the books, most issue points are mentioned but the bibliographers do not consistently mention whether a book actually states first edition or first published (always one of our hangups). In the case of Maugham, this is particularly important as Doubleday, his American publisher, only put the "first edition" statement on the first printings and may have reprinted the book five times the first year. So, you’ll still need the Stott Maugham bibliography. New in dust jacket at published price.

Number 262 of 500 sets, each volume SIGNED BY MAY in green ink on a tipped-in colophon page. The narrative surrounds the adventures of a group of outcasts on a one-way trip to the Pliocene Epoch for, they hope, a utopian escape from the complexity and politics of their present-day intergalactic society (Wikipedia). The companion volume includes a glossary, descriptions of the characters, maps, a chronology, and three interviews with the author. The books are all crisp and fine in near fine to fine dust jackets with the barest wear. Slipcase shows light rubbing to corners and one edge but is otherwise fine. HER BEST-KNOWN SERIES.
