THE SHUNNED HOUSE. H. P. Lovecraft. THE SHUNNED HOUSE.
Athol, Mass. W. Paul Cook / The Recluse Press, 1928. First edition sheets, one of only 100 copies bound by Arkam House in 1961 of Lovecraft's first book of fiction. W. Paul Cook planned to publish "Shunned House" in the first issue of his magazine, The Recluse, but in 1928 he printed approximately 300 sets of sheets with an introduction by Frank Belknap for a separate book edition instead. He neither published nor bound the sheets. In 1934, Robert Barlow (later to be Lovecraft's literary executor) reportedly received 225 copies of the sheets, distributing around 50 over the next few years, some unbound and others in various bindings. Arkham House subsequently obtained approximately 150 useable sets of sheets and issued 50 unbound copies circa 1959 and 100 in black cloth boards in 1961, this being one of the copies in black cloth boards. State "A" of the copyright cancel label per Currey. Slim, small octavo black cloth boards lettered in gilt on spine. Near fine with tiny scratch to bottom front board and spine lettering rubbed as usual but still wholly readable. Issued without dust jacket. [Joshi 1-A-5. Currey C(2)]. LOVECRAFT'S FIRST BOOK.

BIZARRE: "The Thing in the Moonlight." H. P. Lovecraft. BIZARRE: "The Thing in the Moonlight."
Cleveland: Bizarre, 1941. First edition. Volume 4, No. 1, January, 1941. Although not indicated as such in the magazine, Lovecraft's contribution is based on a letter Lovecraft wrote to Donald Wandrei on November 24, 1927, with the first three and last five paragraphs added by editor J. Chapman Miske, who also made slight alterations to the rest of the text. Illustration by Walter Marconette, "His face was a white cone tapering to one blood-red tentacle." The story was later collected in THE TOMB AND OTHER TALES (1970), among others. This issue also includes A. Merritt, John W. Campbell, Hannes Bok, et al. Very good in stapled paperwraps with light soiling and few creases and rubs. BASED NEARLY WORD FOR WORD ON A 1927 LETTER TO DONALD WANDREI.

FANTASY MAGAZINE: "The Challenge from Beyond: Weird Fantasy Story." H. P. Lovecraft. FANTASY MAGAZINE: "The Challenge from Beyond: Weird Fantasy Story."
New York: (Science Fiction Digest Co.), 1935. First edition. Third Anniversary Issue, September, 1935. The feature for this issue being two "round-robin" stories on the theme "The Challenge from Beyond" cooperatively written by five authors each. Lovecraft's fellow "Weird Fantasy" authors are Catherine Lucille "C. L." Moore, A. Merritt, Robert E. Howard and Frank Belknap Long, Jr.; Lovecraft's contribution (which presents Howard with a stumper of a cliff-hanger--the mind of the main character is transported into the body of a horrible alien) runs 26 paragraphs and constitutes the bulk of the story. Also includes a round-robin story from sci-fi writers Stanley G. Weinbaum, Donald Wandrei, Edward E. Smith, Harl Vincent and Murray Leinster. Pages darkened with age, tiny tears to cover edges, small chip from top left front cover, still better than good in stapled paperwraps. 10 AUTHORS! ALL STARS!
