DON'T TOUCH ME. MacKinlay Kantor. DON'T TOUCH ME.
New York: Random House, (1951). First edition, in two very different dust jackets: the original dust jacket and a jacket advertising the first Bantam Books printing with "Presentation copy--Courtesy of Bantam Books" on front panel. The book itself is very good or better, as is the original dust jacket (edges nicked and rubbed, rear panel slightly soiled, creased and rubbed tear to bottom, front corner). The Bantam dust jacket, with a slightly different, grayscale version of the eventual color paperback illustration, has plain flaps, title and author on spine (no mention of publisher), and notes on the back cover, "This Presentation Copy Is the Original Random House Edition." The jacket is light rubbed, chipped at spine ends and corners, and slightly faded at spine. An interesting copy.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED: To a Fan on "Toledo Blade" Letterhead. Carolyn Keene, Mildred Wirt Benson. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED: To a Fan on "Toledo Blade" Letterhead.
Toledo, Ohio: March 5, 1998. On 5 3/4 x 7 1/4" notepaper with letterhead of the Editorial Department, "You write a fine letter .... It amazes me that Nancy Drew remains so popular. Sincerely, Mildred W. Benson (Carolyn Keene)." Benson, the acknowledged creator of Nancy Drew, wrote 23 of the first 30 books beginning in 1930 with THE SECRET OF THE OLD CLOCK. Much like the enduring character she brought life to, she was an adventurer who, in addition to being a writer and journalist, was a pilot and amateur archaeologist. Over the course of her career Benson wrote 112 additional children's books and numerous short stories, and her career in journalism spanned 58 years -- first at the Toledo Times and then at the Toledo Blade, where she continued to write a column until she passed away in 2002 at the age 96. Light creases, stray pen marks on verso, otherwise fine. Includes original mailing envelope addressed by Benson. Letters such as this one, wholly in Benson's own hand, are quite scarce. Presumed publisher's copy with "Doubleday & Co." stamped on front endpaper. Very minor offsets on endpapers, book slightly cocked, cloth spine a little soiled, and a few small spots on internal pages, otherwise very good in two dust jackets: one with a write-up about the book on the back cover; the other with 7 reviews of the book. We assume the one with the reviews is the later jacket. Both jackets have minor edge wear but are still very good or better.

PLAIN FACTS ABOUT SEXUAL LIFE. J. H. Kellogg, John Harvey. PLAIN FACTS ABOUT SEXUAL LIFE.
Battle Creek, Mich. The Office of the Health Reformer, 1877. First edition. Odd and unusual opinions and pronouncements on sex and sexual practices from the Battle Creek doctor famous for the invention (with his brother) of Corn Flakes. Kellogg ran a sanitarium using holistic methods, with a particular focus on nutrition, enemas, exercise and abstinence, and he was known for his "work on the rehabilitation of masturbators, often employing extreme measures, even mutilation, on both sexes. He was an advocate of circumcising young boys to curb masturbation and applying phenol to a young woman's clitoris" (Wikipedia). Topics covered herein include: Sexual Life, Use and Abuse, Chastity, Continence, Marital Excesses, Prevention of Conception, Infanticide and Abortion, The Social Evil, and Solitary Vice. "The prime object of [this book's] preparation has been to call attention to the great prevalence of sexual excesses of all kinds and the heinous crimes resulting from some forms of sexual transgression, and to point out the terrible results which inevitably follow the violation of sexual law" (from the introduction). Small 8vo.; brown cloth lettered and with ornament in gilt on spine and front, blind-stamped borders to boards; brown, coated endpapers; 356 pages, including index, plus 4 pages of ads. Brief underlining and paragraph marked in margin p.89 (a section cautioning against older men "forming unions" with young girls), otherwise near fine. SCARCE TO RARE, perhaps owing to the distribution methods outlined in the introduction, "This work should be judiciously circulated; and to secure this, the publishers will take care to place it in the hands of agents competent to circulate it with discretion." Although not indicated as such in the book, this copy is from the collection of poet, short story writer, and Faulkner scholar Louis Daniel Brodsky. ODD AND UNUSUAL OPINIONS AND PRONOUNCEMENTS ON SEX AND SEXUAL PRACTICES.
