The poem first appeared in 1997 in Poetry Magazine--we assume this broadside was produced sometime the following year. 6 1/2 x 13 inches, printed on recto only. Fine condition.

Both volumes bound in red leather with elaborate gilt and color designs and lettering; top edges gilt; marbled endpapers; slipcases. First volume starting to crack along spine, otherwise both are very good with rubbing along spines and spine ends nicked. Slipcases are also very good though the top of one is partially detached and the bottom of the other is beginning to separate at the bottom.

"BORN TO BE was a remarkable achievement, as Gordon details his rugged upbringing in Montana, recounts many amourous adventures on both sides of the color line, offers blunt commentaries on racial politics, and drops names in copious quantities" (Davis and Foley, HARLEM RENAISSANCE LIVES). Very good to near fine in good, aged dust jacket with darkening to spine and edges, two large chips not affecting any lettering, and splits at folds internally mended with archival tape.
