In dustwrapper a little darkened on top inch of front panel and spine, and with minute chipping on corners and spine ends.

In a lovely, full red leather, gilt-stamped binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for Brentano's WITH ORIGINAL COVERS BOUND IN. Small shelf label on front pastedown, free endpaper edges darkened where offset from inner dentelles, outer hinges rubbed, otherwise near fine. Thackeray (1811 - 1863) was famous for his satirical works, particularly VANITY FAIR, a panoramic portrait of English society. This is one of his five short "Christmas Books" criticizing English nobility which he wrote under his pen name, M. A. Titmarsh.

Tyndall, a prominent 19th century physicist, made a number of discoveries in the realms of infrared radiation and the physical properties of air, and published more than a dozen science books, which brought state-of-the-art 19th century experimental physics to a wider audience. Decorative brick cloth boards with black design on front and rear board and gold lettering at spine. Very good or better with covers lightly scuffed, boards just visable at tips, a few black-ink splashes (possible production error), and name on endpaper.

COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS BY UNGERER, the prolific French illustrator of children's books (he is the recipient of the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award) and of material for adults, including for books, magazines, posters, etc. 36 pages; in blue, stiff, 8 1/2 x 11 inch paperwraps. Illustrated with 36 color drawings and two in black-and-white (some blank pages and some pages with multiple illustrations); text "handwritten" (i.e., reproduced, we assume from Ungerer handwriting but not actually handwritten, not signed). Covers rubbed, small hole to front endpaper at hinge due to old insect damage, rear hinge paper starting, otherwise good to very good with endpapers faintly foxed, light stain to fore edge and contemporary gift inscription on front endpaper. A reasonably attractive copy despite the noted wear.
