THE NAKED AND THE DEAD. Norman Mailer. THE NAKED AND THE DEAD.
New York: Rinehart and Company, (1948). First edition of the AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK, acclaimed as one of the best to come out of WWII and cited as one of Burgess's best 99. From the collection of Adeline Lubell-Naiman. INSCRIBED, "To Adeline/ with -- after all these vicissitudes -- much love./ Norman." Wear to the cheap black paper boards on bottom and top edges and some offset to endpapers, still better than good in about very good dust jacket. Adeline Lubell-Naiman was instrumental in the eventual publication of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD. In 1946, while an editor at Little, Brown, Lubell-Naiman convinced Mailer to submit the first 200 pages of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, which she talked up to her publisher. Unfortunately, she was also the one to suggest historian and critic Bernard DeVoto weigh in on the manuscript--he recommended not publishing. But Mailer subsequently submitted it to Rinehart, who published it in 1948. Over the years, Lubell-Naiman remained close friends with Mailer and his wives. In the summer of 1968, she played the role of "Adeline McCarthy," a president of a women's college in Mailer’s film "Maidstone" (Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center website). INSCRIBED "AFTER ALL THESE VICISSITUDES"

AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO (2 Record Set): Inscribed to his nurse. Groucho Marx. AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO (2 Record Set): Inscribed to his nurse.
(Beverly Hills: A & M Records Inc. 1972). First edition. A&M SP3515. Double album with single leaf insert. INSCRIBED BY GROUCHO ON FRONT COVER in purple, "To Barbara a good nurse and a nice woman / Groucho." It is likely the inscription is to Barbara Winger Bruner, who worked for Marx in 1977, the final year of his life. (According to a 1983 UPI Bulletin, Bruner testified in a lawsuit filed by Marx's estate against Erin Fleming, the Canadian actress who was Marx's companion, characterizing her actions as "hostile and abusive.") This best-selling album was recorded at Carnegie Hall during Marx's last one-man show. The insert features a pictorial collage and quotes from celebrities including T.S. Eliot -- "Your portrait hangs on my wall next to W.B. Yeats. You are my most coveted pin-up. And I am your utmost admirer." Fine.
