TWO TYPED LETTERS, SIGNED. James A. Michener. TWO TYPED LETTERS, SIGNED.
While Associate editor of Macmillan's Educational Department, Michener suggested Mrs. Ella-Frances Barker as one of the authors in a proposed series of geography books for children. Mrs. Barker did not have time to complete the assignment and, unbeknownst to Michener, turned the project over to her young son. The first letter, dated December 30, 1946, is warm and chatty, signed "Jim Michener" and proposes a meeting between Professor and Mrs. Barker and Michener's managing editor, Philip Knowlton. The second letter, dated April 16, 1947, is written after receipt of the manuscript. Diplomatic and decidedly business-like (with not-so-subtle hints that the manuscript is not exactly up to par) it is signed "James A. Michener." Both letters are typed on Macmillan letterhead; the first on a single sheet, the second on two. The first has a very light stain at the head of the page, and light creasing where previously folded into sixths, but is otherwise fine and includes the original mailing envelope. The second letter is a little darkened and lightly creased along the edge of the first page, but is otherwise fine.

SWEET MAN. Gilmore Millen. SWEET MAN.
New York: Viking Press, 1930. First edition of AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on front free endpaper, "Inscribed for my friend George Woodruff with sincere personal regards/ Gilmore Millen/ Los Angeles June 11, 1930." A novel of John Henry, set in Memphis on Beale Street in the 1920s. Gilmore, a newspaperman, described Beale as a street of business and love and murder and theft. An aisle where merchants and pawnbrokers, country Negroes from plantations, créole prostitutes and painted fag men, sleepy gamblers and slick young chauffeurs, crooks and bootleggers and dope peddlers and rich property owners and powdered women and labor agents and blind musicians and confidence men and hard-working Negroes from sawmills and cotton warehouses and factories and stores meet and stand on corners and slip upstairs to gambling joints and rooming hotels and barber shops and bawdy houses. Spine very slightly faded, wear to bottom edges of boards and some additional writing (above and below Millen's inscription), otherwise very good or better lacking dust jacket.

THE COLOSSUS OF MAROUSSI. Henry Miller. THE COLOSSUS OF MAROUSSI.
San Francisco: The Colt Press, 1941). First edition. This non-pornographic piece must have disappointed publishers anticipating something more lurid from Miller afer his "Tropic of Cancer" because ten New York publishers rejected it before Colt Press accepted it with an advance of only 100 USD [Shifreen & Jackson A26b]. INSCRIBED -- "TO TAMAR, THE FLAMING MEDEA OF BIG SUR WHO IMPROVISES 'UNITS' AND ISLANDS OF FOG AND SEA ANEMONES. HENRY MILLER. 4/2/44." The recipient is, perhaps, Robinson Jeffers who, though not a friend of Miller's, was a fellow inhabitant of Big Sur and whose most famous poem is titled "Tamar." Or more likely, though a bit disturbingly, it is perhaps inscribed to Tamar Nais Hodel, who was named for the poem and was the young daughter of Miller's friend and fellow inhabitant of Big Sur, Dr. George Hill Hodel -- a suspect in the infamous 1947 "Black Dahlia" murder and mutilation of Elizabeth Short. Tamar Hodel would have been around 9 years old at the time of the inscription, a tender young age to receive an inscribed book from a friend of ones father. But this was a father who allowed Man Ray to take nude pictures of her when she was 11 years old and whom she accused at 14 of sexual molesting her beginning when she was 11. (He was acquitted and fled the country soon after.) Name at base of front endpaper, cloth at spine ends and corners slightly frayed, general light cover wear, front hinge repaired where previously loose otherwise good to very good, lacking dust jacket. MYSTERIOUS INSCRIPTION.

Matted and framed in white on white with overall dimensions of approximately 32 x 40".
