Milton’s epic poem recounting the temptation of Christ from the Gospel of Luke, together with his tragic closet play drawn from the story of Samson in the Old Testament. 16mo circa 18th-century polished calf leather binding with raised spine bands flanked by V-shaped ornaments in blind on sides, gilt-stamped red leather spine label, stylized crosses and ruling in black and blind on spine panels and covers; board edges and leather turn-ins hatched in blind, marbled endpapers, and all edges red; 132 pages, undated License page opposite title page, consecutive pagination with page [71] being a separate title page for SAMSON AGONISTES, 4 pages of ads at rear. Very good with covers mildly scuffed and worn; text block showing general aging, soiling and scattered staining; 1880 gift inscription on verso front endpaper, blank recto of License leaf showing a few ink scribbles, heavier soiling, and chipping at upper corner and fore edge; and small offset to title page from one-word ink notation at head of License page. An early affordable alternative to the first edition.
