Preceded only by the rare, unissued first state with title page mistakenly dated 1871. In variant binding of smooth red cloth with covers bordered in blind and only top edge gilt. [Williams, Madan, Green 85; Lovett 734]. 12mo gilt-stamped red cloth boards with cover vignettes of Alice holding a pig and Cheshire Cat (on front and back, respectively); 42 illustrations by John Tenniel; top edge gilt; 189 pages. Very good to near fine with spine slightly tanned, two tiny marks to front board, touch of minor staining to page fore edge, hinge visible between pp. 56 and 57 (no loosening of pages, and the binding is still tight), and rear hinge evidently strengthened. Armorial bookplate of James Nairne on front endpaper. Scarce.
