FOREST OF THE NIGHT.

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Co., (1960). First edition. His scarce second book. SIGNED BY JONES on the title page. A story of "the Tennessee frontier of 1802 -- the crude, scattered settlements ... [and] ... oceanic forest, in whose depths reality blurs into dream, nightmare, obsession" (from the jacket flap). 8vo silver-stamped green cloth with tree-lined hill design on front board; 305 pages. Fine in near fine dust jacket with spine ends and corners lightly nicked and rubbed. Although not noted as such in the book, this copy from the collection of Walter Sullivan (1924-2006), who was an author, critic, longtime Vanderbilt University professor, authority on Southern literature, and founding member of The Fellowship of Southern Writers. Jones (1925-2012), who was associated with the "Southern Agrarians," was himself a Fellowship charter member. A scarce book, exceedingly so signed.
