New York: McGraw-Hill, (1960). First edition. INSCRIBED BY SPENCER on title page, “For Walter and Jane Sullivan/ Cari saluti/ Elizabeth/ 31 Oct 1987.” Walter Sullivan (1924-2006) was an author, critic, longtime Vanderbilt University professor, authority on Southern literature and -- along with Spencer -- one of the founding members of The Fellowship of Southern Writers. His wife, Jane Harrison Sullivan (1923-2022), taught English literature at Aquinas College. The thought-provoking story of a mother's dilemma and concern when, while the two women are traveling together in Italy, her developmentally disabled daughter enters into a romantic relationship with a young Italian man. Basis for the 1962 romantic comedy starring Olivia de Havilland, Yvette Mimieux, and George Hamilton, and the Tony Award-winning musical stage adaptation by Craig Lucas with music and lyrics by Adam Guettel. Fine in near fine dust jacket with tear along upper front flap fold internally mended with archival tape. A relatively scarce book that is especially so signed or inscribed. Also included is an 8 x 10" black-and-white still from the movie.
