THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X.

New York: Grove Press, (1965). First edition. “One of the 10 most influential nonfiction books of the 20th century” -- Time magazine. Haley’s first book, ghostwritten by him from the more than 50 in-depth interviews conducted from 1963 to Malcolm X’s assassination in February 1965. Covers Malcolm X’s life from birth to convicted criminal to Nation of Islam spokesperson and includes an epilogue about his work on the book with an account of his last weeks, the assassination, and the aftermath. “I know that societies often have killed the people who have helped to change those societies. And if I can die having brought any light, having exposed any meaningful truth that will help to destroy the racist cancer that is malignant in the body of America – then, all of the credit is due to Allah. Only the mistakes have been mine.” – Malcom X. 8vo gilt-stamped black cloth; photo-illustrated; 455 pages. Near fine to fine with spine lettering only slightly dulled; in bright, near fine dust jacket with lower front corner nicked, few very tiny inconspicuous tears, and light stain on verso at bottom edge rear panel not visible from the front but resulting in subtle rumple. Much nicer than usually seen and scarce thus.
