New York: Subscription Book Department, The American News Company, 1879. First edition. Two volumes. 4to gilt-stamped three-quarter leather over marbled paper boards; top edges gilt; marbled endpapers. Well illustrated with "eight hundred illustrations" depicting scenes from around the world; steel engraved frontis portrait of Grant in volume I; and 1879 folding world map by J.S. Kemp with red line indicating the countries visited by the Grants in volume II. After leaving office in 1877, Grant and his wife, Julia Dent Grant, embarked on an unprecedented 2 ½ year tour through Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North America accompanied by their son Jesse and New York Herald journalist John Russell Young. Remarkably “wherever they went, citizens from all walks of life greeted them warmly” (website of the National Park Service). Very good or better with some loss to marbled paper at board ends but bindings still quite attractive and interior free from foxing.
