THE LOTTERY.
(Napa: Tales for Travellers, 1985). First edition thus: Number 13 in the short-lived "Selected Short Stories by Great Writers" series devised by James H. Schmidt in 1982 with the intent of providing quality reading material for daily commuters that was inexpensive enough to share. Originally issued in 4 slipcased volumes each of which housed 12 map-folded pamphlets. Most of the individual pamphlets included a single short story though a few had an additional story and/or poem. This particular one includes 2 poems -- "Daffodils" by William Wadsworth and "To Daffidols" by Robert Herrick" -- offered "in contrast to the starkness of this powerful story." Each of the 48 pamphlets in the series is 24 pages (including illustrated covers) printed on both sides of a single sheet folded up like a map. Fine. Increasingly scarce. "THESE TALES ARE DEDICATED TO ALL TRAVELLERS, RIDERS ON THIS EARTH TOGETHER"
