London: Printed for William Innys, Richard Ware, Aaron Ward, et al. 1747. First edition. Massive and endlessly interesting two-volume set illustrated with a grand total of 70 maps and plates. Lacking only “The World in Two Hemispheres” and, apparently, a separate map of “Portugal” (the “List of Maps and Plates” calls for separate maps of Spain and Portugal, whereas this set has a map showing both). This set also includes a second, separate map of “Netherlands, or Low Countries” with inset for “Plan of the City of Mons” not on the "List of Maps and Plates." VOLUME ONE calls for 30 maps and plates and 29 are present here – including both single plates titled “Solar System” and “Artificial Sphere”; 9 folding maps (“Europe,” “Great Britain and Ireland,” “England and Wales,” “Scotland,” “France,” “Spain and Portugal,” “Netherlands, or Low Countries,” “Poland and Lithuania,” and “Hungary and Transilvania”); 2 double-plate folded maps (“Chart of the World” and “Savoy and Piedmont”); and 16 full-plate maps showing other countries and/or areas in Europe (list supplied upon request). VOLUME 2 calls for 41 maps, all of which are present – there are 12 folding maps (“Turkey in Europe,” “Asia,” “Turkey in Asia,” “Anatolia,” “Persia,” “The Russian Empire,” “China,” “Mogul Empire,” “East India Islands,” “Nubia and Abissinia,” “Negroland and Upper Guiney,” and “Southern Parts of Africa”); 23 double-plate folding maps (list supplied upon request), and 6 single-plate maps (“Asia Minor,” “The Holy Land,” “The Caspian Sea,” “Virginia and Maryland,” “Antiqua,” and “Greenland”). David Rumsey, in the notes to the copy in his collection available online, states that “the 70 maps were also published in two other forms: in "A Complete Atlas" of 1752, and as the Maps for the "Complete Collection of Voyages" by John Harris, in 1744-48 (M&B).” He also notes that “there are several important maps of America: America, West Indies, Mexico, Louisiana, Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania et al, and Newfoundland et al.” Two volumes, folios (approximately 11 x 17”), fairly freshly rebound in full leather, “Chart of the World,” which is detached from stub and laid in, shows chipping along upper edges of the margins (not affecting map itself); otherwise, despite the occasional chip, light stain or tear, the set is altogether near fine with most pages surprisingly fresh and bright. Quite scarce, especially as very nearly complete as is this set.
